Shift interrupt switch assembly for MerCruiser Alpha One and Bravo sterndrives, replacing 87-814281A5. It is the micro switch part that sits on the shift plate and momentarily cuts the ignition as the drive comes out of gear, and it is supplied as 1 x switch assembly.
Without it the dog clutch will not release under load, so coming out of gear needs a shove and grinds on the way. With a failed switch the motor dies when you shift into gear, which is the classic symptom and the one that gets mistaken for a carburettor or idle problem.
It fits the 3.0 L four cylinder, the 4.3 L V6 and the 5.0 L and 5.7 L V8 in Alpha One and Bravo form, covering the carburettor and Gen+ engines from 1996 to 2001 in the list below. The switch itself is common across those engines, which is why one number covers the whole range.

- If the engine dies when shifting into gear, test the switch first before touching the carburettor
- Adjust the switch so it only opens at the shift detent, a switch that stays closed will cut the motor under load
