Skeg Guard Protector 27061 for Mercury Mariner 75-175 HP Outboard 316 Stainless
Skeg Guard Protector 27061 for Mercury Mariner 75-175 HP Outboard 316 Stainless
Product Overview
Skeg guard protector for the Mercury and Mariner outboards, supplied as 1 x skeg guard in 18 gauge 316 stainless steel with a 3 mm lower wear tab. This is the part that goes over the skeg at the bottom of the gearcase and takes the scrapes that would otherwise wear the aluminium away. It replaces Megaware SkegGuard 27061 and crosses to Panther 35-SS620, it weighs 670 g with packaging, and it covers the Mercury 75 to 175 HP four strokes and two strokes listed in the table below.
The skeg is the fin under the gearcase. It is the lowest point on the engine, and on a ramp or a shallow beach it is the part that touches first. Aluminium wears away, and once enough of it has gone the gearcase is exposed.
The guard slides on over what is left of the skeg and bolts through it. It does not replace a skeg that has snapped off clean at the housing, but it will cover one that is worn down, rounded off, or broken short, as long as 2 to 3 inches of the original is still there.
316 stainless is the grade for salt water. It is fitted with a rubber mallet in under ten minutes, and the pre-drilled holes are used to mark the skeg before it is drilled with a 1/4 inch bit.
There is a drain hole at the bottom of the guard so water does not sit inside it and freeze or corrode. The 3 mm lower wear tab is the part that takes the ramp, so it is thicker than the rest.

This is the application list for the 27061 guard. The same guard does not fit every Mercury gearcase, so check the horsepower and the year against the table before ordering, and if the engine is not in it send us the model and the serial number and we will check it against the guard.
The 4.75 inch torpedo line covers the 150 and 175 HP two strokes, Optimax, Pro XS and EFI gearcases from 1978 to 2018. The 75, 90 and 115 HP four strokes from 2015 use a different gearcase and are listed separately for that reason.
What The Guard Protects Against
| Damage | What Happens Without A Guard | What The Guard Does |
|---|---|---|
| Ramp dragging | The skeg wears flat on the bottom edge | The 3 mm wear tab takes the wear instead |
| Hidden debris | Chips and gouges out of the aluminium | The stainless shell covers the damaged area |
| Beach launching | The skeg rounds off season by season | A hard skin over the worn skeg |
| Shallow water contact | The skeg bends or breaks short | Covers a broken skeg with 2 to 3 inches left |
| Trailer contact | The leading edge is chewed | The polished shell protects the leading edge |

| 5 | Drill the skeg with a 1/4 inch bit at the marks |
