Thermostat 71C 17670-90J10 17670-90J11 18-3687 for Suzuki DF90 DF115 DF140 DF200 DF250 DF300
Thermostat 71C 17670-90J10 17670-90J11 18-3687 for Suzuki DF90 DF115 DF140 DF200 DF250 DF300
Product Overview
Thermostat for Suzuki four stroke outboards from 70 HP to 300 HP, opening at 71 °C (159.8 °F). It replaces Suzuki 17670-90J10 and 17670-90J11 and crosses to Sierra 18-3687, and it is the same part across the whole DF four cylinder and V6 range.
The 71 °C rating is the cold side of the Suzuki specification. A thermostat that opens late or not at all shows up as a motor that idles hot and sets the overheat alarm at low speed, then behaves normally once the boat is on the plane and the pressure relief valve opens.
It fits DF90 from 2001 to 2008, DF100 from 2012 to 2016, DF115 from 2001 to 2008 and again 2012 to 2016, DF140 from 2002 to 2016, the DF150 and DF175 from 2006 to 2016, the DF200, DF225 and DF250 from 2004 to 2016 and the DF300 from 2007 to 2014.

Overheat Symptoms and the Thermostat
| What You See | Most Likely Cause | What To Do |
|---|---|---|
| Alarm at idle, normal on the plane | Thermostat stuck closed or opening late | Renew the thermostat first |
| Motor never reaches temperature | Thermostat stuck open | Renew, cold running washes the bores |
| Alarm at full throttle only | Water pump or pressure valve | Check the impeller before the thermostat |
| Alarm both at idle and at speed | Blocked water passage or pump failure | Strip the pump and check the passages |
| Temperature gauge climbs slowly | Thermostat opening late | Test in hot water, renew if slow |
| Steady overheat after a beaching | Sand in the cooling circuit | Flush and check the thermostat seat |
Salt Water and the Cooling Circuit
| How the Motor Is Used | Effect on the Thermostat | What To Do |
|---|---|---|
| Salt water, flushed on muffs | Salt scale builds on the seat | Flush after every trip |
| Mud and sand shallow water | Grit jams the valve open | Inspect after grounding or beaching |
| Long storage in the open | Valve rusts to the seat | Renew at the start of the season |
| Cold northern water | Cold running if the valve sticks open | Check the gauge on the first run |
| Warm southern water | Less margin, the alarm comes sooner | Servicing on hours matters more |
| Fishing boat idling for hours | Low flow, hot spots at idle | Check the thermostat every season |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Check the number on the old thermostat, 17670-90J10 and 17670-90J11 are the same rating |
| 2 | Confirm the model and year, the fitment runs from DF90 to DF300 |
| 3 | Drain the cooling system and remove the thermostat cover, note the bolt positions |
| 4 | Clean the seat and the cover face, scale under the flange holds the valve off its seat |
| 5 | Fit the thermostat with the air bleed hole at the top, as marked on the old one |
| 6 | Fit a new gasket, tighten the cover evenly and refill |
| 7 | Run on muffs until the motor reaches temperature and check the telltale |
| 8 | Watch the gauge for a full cycle, the motor should settle at its normal range |
