Throttle Position Sensor TPS 8M0097035 for Mercruiser 350 383 496 5.7L 8.1L 8.2L
Throttle Position Sensor TPS 8M0097035 for Mercruiser 350 383 496 5.7L 8.1L 8.2L
Product Overview
Throttle position sensor 8M0097035 for MerCruiser sterndrive engines, the TPS that fits the 350 CID, 383 CID and 496 CID blocks and is also sold as 853678T, 802623 and 853678. It crosses to Sierra 18-7700, measures 150 mm x 180 mm x 50 mm (5.91 in x 7.09 in x 1.97 in) and weighs 27 g including packaging. One sensor is supplied.
The TPS tells the ECM how far the throttle is open. On these engines it also decides when the shift interrupt and the idle air control should act, so a worn sensor does not only affect power, it affects gear changes and idling too.
The common failure is a dead spot in the resistive track at the point where the throttle sits most of the time, just off idle. That shows up as a stumble the moment you open the throttle from a cruise, not as a fault code.
The sensor fits the 5.7L, 6.2L, 8.1L and 8.2L MerCruiser engines listed below, and the same body is used on Volvo Penta and OMC engines of the same era.

| Hunting idle that will not settle | TPS signal not returning to closed | Fit the new sensor |
| Harsh gear engagement | Shift interrupt getting a bad signal | Fit the new sensor |
| Intermittent limp mode with no stored code | Signal dropping out | Fit the new sensor |
| Poor acceleration but clean top end | Worn low range of the track | Fit the new sensor |
| Code for TPS range after a long run | Heat related failure inside the sensor | Fit the new sensor |
Fitting Notes
