Product Overview
Trim cylinder ram rebuild kit for Volvo Penta sterndrives and inboards, supplied as 1 x rebuild kit. This is the seal kit that reseals the trim cylinder when the leg starts dropping on its own. It replaces Volvo Penta 3860881, and it fits the 32 engine models, 27 drive models and 3 other units listed in the tables below.
The trim cylinder is the ram that lifts and holds the leg. Inside it there is a piston on the end of the ram, with seals on the piston and a wiper and scraper set at the top of the cylinder where the ram comes out.
When those seals go, oil gets past the piston and the leg stops holding. The usual way it shows is a leg that creeps down overnight, or that will not stay up at speed. The pump still runs, so the motor is fine, and the oil is going past the seals instead of pushing the ram.
The second sign is oil. A trim cylinder with a failed top seal leaves a film of oil down the ram and a ring of oil on the water. Once the level drops far enough the pump starts drawing air and the trim gets slow and noisy.
The eBay title for this kit gives the engine range as 430-740 and then lists AD, DP, SP, SM and SX at 3860881. The 430-740 in that title is shorthand for the 430, 431, 432, 434, 500, 501, 570, 572 and 740 models named in the tables below, not every number in between.
