Trim Sender Sensor 21484383 3841840 for Volvo Penta SX-A DPS-A DPS-B Sterndrive Trim Gauge 4.3 5.0 5.7 8.1 L — Germany Local Warehouse
Product Overview
Trim sender sensor for Volvo Penta SX-A, DPS-A and DPS-B sterndrives, supplied as 1 sensor. It replaces Volvo Penta 21484383 and 3841840 and fits the drives used on the petrol and diesel sterndrives from the 4.3 L V6 up to the 8.1 L V8. Shipped from our Germany local warehouse.
The sender is a variable resistor on a bracket on the drive. As the leg goes up the arm sweeps across the resistor and the dash gauge follows. The trim limit switch normally sits on the same bracket, which is why a dead gauge and a dead limit function often arrive together.
Read the number off the old sender before ordering. The earlier SX, DP-S and DP-A drives use a different sender that looks close enough to fit a photo and not close enough to work.

What the Gauge Is Telling You
| Gauge Behaviour | Most Likely Cause | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Needle pinned at one end, never moves | Sender open circuit or dead resistor track | Resistance across 21484383 while the arm is swept |
| Needle jumps when the boat is on plane | Worn arm or loose linkage, contact breaks | Hold the arm still and see if the gauge settles |
| Reads full up with the drive down | Sender fitted a spline off, or arm bent | Refit with the drive fully down and watch the gauge |
| Gauge moves the wrong way | Sender for the other drive family fitted | Number on the old part should be 3841840 |
| Gauge fine but trim limit does not work | Limit switch on the same bracket has failed | Switch is separate, the sender may be fine |
| Gauge reads a narrow band only | Track worn at the ends, common on old senders | Renew the sender, cleaning will not restore it |
Sender, Limit Switch and Wiring
| Part | Job | What Fails First |
|---|---|---|
| Trim sender 21484383 | Drives the dash gauge | Resistor track wears where the arm sits most |
| Trim limit switch | Stops the leg rising past the safe point | Plastic cam and micro switch, separate part |
| Sender bracket | Holds both, bolts to the drive | Corrosion between bracket and drive housing |
| Wiring loom | Carries the signal to the dash | Green pins in the connector, usually at the transom |
| Gauge on the dash | Shows the reading | Rarely the fault, check the sender first |
| Ground at the drive | Reference for the signal | Loose ground makes the gauge wander |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Read 21484383 or 3841840 off the old sender, SX and DP-S senders look similar and do not work |
| 2 | Move the arm by hand with the ignition on and watch the gauge, no movement means no signal |
| 3 | Check the connector pins at the transom for green corrosion before blaming the sender |
| 4 | Fit the sender with the drive fully down, then have someone watch the gauge as you lift it |
| 5 | Set the arm so the gauge reads empty at full down and full at full up |
| 6 | Check the trim limit switch on the same bracket, it is a separate part and often dead too |
| 7 | Check the ground strap at the drive, a loose one makes a new sender read badly |
| 8 | Run the drive through the full range on the water, not only on the trailer |
