Water Pump Impeller 0377230 377230 18-3083 for Johnson Evinrude 35 40 50 55 HP Outboard
Water Pump Impeller 0377230 377230 18-3083 for Johnson Evinrude 35 40 50 55 HP Outboard
Product Overview
Water pump impeller for Johnson and Evinrude two stroke outboards from 35 HP to 55 HP, the six blade neoprene impeller that moves cooling water up to the powerhead. It replaces 0377230, 377230, 0777213, 777213, 0777821 and 777821 and crosses to Sierra 18-3083, GLM 89660, CEF 500352 and Mallory 9-45209, and it is one impeller with a drive key.
The impeller measures 69.85 mm outside diameter, 21.84 mm high and 16 mm at the hub with a keyway, and those three numbers decide whether it fits. A pump that takes this impeller will not take a 2.75 in impeller from another family, and a keyed shaft is not interchangeable with a splined one.
On these older motors the impeller is the part that ends the season: neoprene takes a set when it sits dry over winter, and the vanes that were straight in October are curled and cracked by May. Run a motor with a set impeller and the first thing you notice is a weak tell tale, then a hot powerhead.

When the Impeller Needs Renewing
| What You See | What It Means | What To Do |
|---|---|---|
| Weak or missing tell tale | Vanes set or broken | Renew the impeller before the next run |
| Motor hot at idle only | Impeller slipping at low rpm | Renew the impeller, check the key |
| Rubber pieces in the thermostat | Vanes have broken up | Renew and flush the cooling passages |
| Vanes curled in one direction | Stored dry and set | Renew, the pump cannot recover |
| Cracks at the base of the vanes | Age and UV | Renew every season on an old motor |
| Overheat after a shallow water start | Sand and grit in the pump | Renew, flush and check the strainer |
Older Johnson and Evinrude Pumps
| How the Motor Is Used | Effect on the Impeller | What To Do |
|---|---|---|
| Laid up wet over winter | Fouling and a set impeller | Renew in spring before the first trip |
| Stored dry | Vanes curl and crack | Renew, do not run it to see if it works |
| River and shallow water | Grit wears the vane tips | Check the strainer, renew the impeller annually |
| Salt water | Salt crystals stiffen the rubber | Flush on muffs after every trip |
| Long periods between use | Rubber ages on the shelf too | Check the date and the vane condition |
| Modified or tired motor | Runs hot already | Renew the impeller first, then look elsewhere |
