Water Pump Impeller 47-81242M 47-95611M 662-44352-01 18-3063 for Mercury 8 15 HP Yamaha 6 8 HP Outboard 39.65 mm 6 Blade — Germany Local Warehouse
Product Overview
Water pump impeller, a cooling system part for the small Mercury and Yamaha two stroke outboards from 6 HP to 15 HP. It replaces Mercury 47-81242M and 47-95611M and Yamaha 662-44352-01, and crosses to Sierra 18-3063 and Mallory 9-45608. The impeller measures 39.65 mm (1.56 in) outside, 14.08 mm (0.55 in) at the hub and 21.96 mm (0.86 in) deep, with 6 blades on a key drive in neoprene. One impeller is supplied. Shipped from our Germany local warehouse.
Those are the numbers to check against the old part. The 6 HP and 8 HP pumps look alike from the outside, but the hub bore differs and a loose impeller spins on the shaft instead of pumping water.
At this size the impeller is often the only scheduled service the motor gets. Pull it every second season and wipe out the housing, and replace the whole pump if the stainless liner is scored, because a scored liner wears a new impeller out in months.

Small Motors on Baltic and Lake Water
| How the Boat Is Used | Effect on the Impeller | What To Do |
|---|---|---|
| Baltic and North Sea salt water | Salt dries on the vanes between trips | Flush on muffs after every trip |
| Brandenburg and Mecklenburg lakes | Silt and weed reach the intake | Check the intake grille each trip |
| Dinghy kept on a trailer | Vanes take a set between outings | Renew at the start of the season |
| Motor used for trolling all day | Constant low speed, vane tips wear | Inspect every second season |
| Shallow slipway with sand | Grit scores the housing liner | Check the liner at each impeller change |
| Motor tilted up on a bank | Pump runs dry and burns the vanes | Never start tilted, always in water |
Winter Storage
| Situation | What Happens in the Pump | What To Do |
|---|---|---|
| Water left in the pump below 0 °C | Ice distorts the housing and the vanes | Drain the pump and store the leg down |
| Motor stored in an unheated shed | Condensation rusts the drive key | Grease the shaft splines before storage |
| Vanes resting against the housing all winter | Rubber takes a permanent set | Renew the impeller in spring |
| Fuel left in the carburettor | Not the pump, but the motor will not start | Run the carburettor dry |
| First start in April | Dry blades on a dry liner tear at once | Run on muffs before launch |
| Salt left on the housing bolts | Corrosion seizes the bolts | Rinse and grease the bolts at lay up |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Measure the old impeller, 39.65 mm (1.56 in) outside and 14.08 mm (0.55 in) at the hub |
| 2 | Check the model and year, the Mercury 8 and 15 HP used this pump in 1977, 1978 and 1987 |
| 3 | Check the pump housing and the stainless liner for grooves before fitting a new impeller |
| 4 | Check the drive key and the slot in the shaft, a worn slot spins the new impeller |
| 5 | Bend the vanes in the direction of rotation as the impeller goes into the housing |
| 6 | Coat the bore with glycerine, not grease on the rubber |
| 7 | Seat the water tube grommet squarely, a pinched grommet loses pressure under load |
| 8 | Run on muffs and check the telltale before the first trip, then again at planing speed |
