Product Overview
Water pump impeller kit for Mercury two stroke outboards from 3.5 HP to 9.8 HP. The pack is 1 x impeller and 1 x drive key, replacing 47-89980, 47-89980B, 47-68988 and the key 8M0032835, with Sierra 18-3054 as the cross reference.
These are the small single and twin cylinder motors where the pump lives in the lower unit and the key is what drives the impeller off the shaft. A kit without the key leaves you reusing a part that is usually the first thing to wear a flat.
Mercury built this pump over a long run and changed the serial break points by region, so the fitment below is listed by horsepower and serial number rather than by year. Check the serial on the swivel bracket plate.

Before You Buy
- Check the serial number on the swivel bracket against the table above
- Check the old impeller and the key both come out, a lost key is why the last one failed
- Check the pump housing liner for grooves, a worn liner will not seal against a new impeller
- Grease the housing and fit the key in the shaft slot before the impeller goes on
- Turn the shaft by hand after assembly to confirm the blades fold the right way
- Run in a tank and check the telltale before the first trip
