Water Pump Impeller Kit 47-89980 47-68988 8M0032835 18-3054 for Mercury Mariner 3.5 3.6 4 4.5 7.5 9.8 HP Two Stroke Outboard with Drive Key — Germany Local Warehouse
Product Overview
Water pump impeller kit with drive key, a cooling system part for Mercury and Mariner 3.5 HP to 9.8 HP two stroke outboards. It replaces 47-89980, 47-89980B, 47-68988 and the key 8M0032835. The impeller is 6 blade, 32 mm (1.26 in) across, 14.4 mm (0.57 in) deep on an 11 mm (0.43 in) shaft. Shipped from our Germany local warehouse.
These are the small single and twin cylinder motors on tenders, dinghies and small lake boats, where the pump sits in the lower unit and the impeller is driven off the shaft by a small key. The key is supplied in the kit because it is the part that wears a flat first, and a flat key lets the impeller slip while the shaft keeps turning.
Mariner is the same motor as Mercury with different decals, so one kit covers both badges. Mercury built this pump over a long run and moved the serial break points by market, so check the serial on the swivel bracket plate against the table below rather than going by model year.

|---|---|---|
| Key flattened on both sides | Impeller slips, water flow falls | Fit the new key from the kit |
| Key missing on strip down | Nothing drives the impeller | Find it in the housing before assembly |
| Key slot in the shaft worn wide | New key rocks and shears | Shaft or lower unit work needed |
| Impeller hub rounded out | Key spun inside the hub | New kit, the old hub is scrap |
| Key seized in the shaft slot | Salt or corrosion welded it in | Soak and press out, never hammer the shaft |
| Wrong key from another kit | Too short to reach both slots | Only use 8M0032835 or 56655 |
Small Outboards on German Waters
| How the Motor Is Used | Effect on the Pump | What To Do |
|---|---|---|
| Tender to a moored boat on a lake | Many short runs, long idle periods | Check the impeller each season |
| Shallow river and canal work | Silt and weed reach the pump | Clean the intake grate every trip |
| Motor tilted up on a bracket | Pump drains and runs dry on start | Lower the motor fully before starting |
| Boat ashore from October to April | Blades take a set in the housing | Renew the kit before the season |
| Frost in the lower unit | Trapped water splits the pump housing | Drain the pump at lay up |
| Motor run at full throttle for hours | Blades wear on the cam face | Check the impeller at 100 hours |
Sand and Overheating
| What You See | What It Points To | What To Check |
|---|---|---|
| Telltale weak or missing | Impeller worn or key slipped | Strip the pump, check the key and blades |
| Motor hot at low speed only | Blades set flat at rest | Renew the impeller |
| Grit in the pump housing | Pump picked up sand near the ramp | Flush and check the wear plate |
| Rubber crumbs in the telltale | Impeller breaking up | Find every blade before reassembly |
| Steady telltale, no heat | Pump still sound | Keep the kit for next season |
| Overheat after a long lay up | Blades stuck to the housing | Renew before the first start |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Check the serial on the swivel bracket plate against the table, the break points differ by market |

| 5 | Grease the housing lightly and fold the blades in the direction of rotation |
| 6 | Seat the new key and slide the impeller straight down the shaft |
| 7 | Fit the housing and check the drive shaft turns the impeller by hand |
