Water Pump Impeller Kit 47-89981 for Mercury 4 4.5 7.5 9.8 HP Outboard with Key
Water Pump Impeller Kit 47-89981 for Mercury 4 4.5 7.5 9.8 HP Outboard with Key
Product Overview
Water pump impeller kit for Mercury outboards from 4 HP to 9.8 HP, replacing 47-89981 and 47-65957 and crossing to Sierra 18-3039. The kit is one impeller at 32 mm outside diameter and 14.4 mm wide, plus the drive key that turns it.
The impeller is the 6 blade neoprene part with a 11.6 mm bore, key driven rather than splined. Neoprene is the right compound for raw water pumps: it stays flexible in cold water and recovers its shape after sitting dry on a mooring, where nitrile hardens and takes a set.
It covers the single cylinder 4 HP and 4.5 HP motors, the 6 HP from 1970s and 1980s production, and the 7.5 HP and 9.8 HP (Merc 110) motors by serial number range. Serial number checking matters here because Mercury changed the pump housing across those years and the later housings take a different impeller.

Before You Buy
- Check the serial number against the ranges above, Mercury changed impellers across these years
- Check the pump housing and wear plate for scoring while the impeller is out, a scored plate cuts flow
- Check the drive key is a firm fit in the shaft slot, a worn slot lets the key spin out and the pump stops
- Fit the impeller with the blades bent in the direction of rotation, and grease the housing before it goes in
- Do not run the motor dry on muffs for long, a dry impeller overheats in under a minute
- Check for a telltale stream at idle after the first start, and watch the engine temperature on the first run
- 30-Day Easy Returns
