Water pump impeller kit, a complete repair part for the 5.5 HP, 6 HP and 7.5 HP Johnson and Evinrude two-strokes built from 1954 to 1979, and it replaces 0763758, 0391391 and 382797. The kit contains the impeller 0387361, the plastic housing 0323596, the cup 0324641, the plate 0323597, the grommet, the drive key and 4 bolts, so the whole pump is renewed in one job rather than only the rubber.

The 5.5 and 7.5 HP models are the small twins that have been on lakes and rivers for decades, and the pump on them is still the first thing to fail after a winter. Once the impeller vanes have taken a set the engine still runs, but it pumps very little at idle, and an old twin at trolling speed is exactly where that shows up as a hot cylinder head.

Fitting the kit rather than the impeller alone matters on these engines. The plastic housing in this kit wears into a groove that a new impeller cannot seal against, and the stainless cup underneath polishes through. A kit with the housing, cup and plate in it is the only way to get the pump back to its original delivery rate.

Before You Buy

• Check the engine model and serial, this kit is for the 5.5, 6 and 7.5 HP twins with the plastic pump housing and does not suit the later metal housings
• Compare the old impeller with 6 blades and the housing bolt pattern before fitting
• Check the driveshaft splines while the pump is off, a dry spline will strip the new impeller key
• Lubricate the impeller with glycerine and turn the shaft clockwise as the housing goes down
• Torque the 4 bolts evenly, uneven torque distorts the plastic housing and the pump will not prime
• Run the engine on muffs and confirm a strong telltale before the boat goes in the water
