Product Overview

Complete water pump kit with housing, a cooling system part for Yamaha 50 HP, 60 HP and 70 HP outboards. It replaces 6H3-W0078-A0-00, 6H3-W0078-00-00 and housing 6H3-44311-00-00 and crosses to Sierra 18-3461, and the impeller measures 51.8 mm (2.04 in) outside, 18 mm (0.71 in) at the bore and 19 mm (0.75 in) deep. Shipped from our Germany local warehouse.

The housing is in the box for a reason. The stainless cup inside it scores when an impeller lets go, and a new impeller run in a scored housing loses flow from the first trip, so the two are replaced as a set on these three cylinder motors.

It fits the 1996 F50TL and T50TL, the 1991 P60TL and the 70ET and 70TL from 1984 to 1991. Later 70 HP motors use a different pump, so read the model plate before ordering.

Housing, Cup or Impeller: What Actually Wears Out

Part How It Fails What It Looks Like
Impeller Blades set, crack or tear Tip wear, cracks at the root
Stainless cup 663-44322-00 Deep scores from a failed impeller Grooves you can feel with a fingernail
Housing 6H3-44311 Aluminium corrodes around the cup White powder, pitted sealing faces
Wear plate 6H3-44323 Rubbed through by the blade ends A ring worn into the plate
Gaskets Compressed and hard Leak path where the housing joins the leg
Drive key 90280-03M03 Sheared or worn flat Impeller spins, no water moved

Salt Water and the Aluminium Housing

German Use Effect on the Housing What To Do
Baltic and North Sea salt water Aluminium corrodes around the stainless cup Flush on muffs after every trip
Salt left in the pump over winter Cup and housing seize together Drain and flush before storage
Brackish harbour water, silt Grit packs between the cup and the blades Check the cup each season
Freshwater lakes Scale rather than salt, slower corrosion Clean the cup and check the plate
Trailer stored with the leg down Water drains, less corrosion Store with the leg vertical
Motor run dry at the slip Blades burn in seconds Never start without water

Winter Lay-Up and Frost

Situation What Happens in the Pump What To Do
Water left in the housing below 0 °C Ice cracks the housing and distorts the cup Drain the pump and store the leg down
Boat ashore October to April Blades take a set against the cup Renew the kit before the season
Motor stored in an unheated shed Condensation rusts the drive key Grease the shaft splines before storage
First start in spring Dry blades on a dry cup tear immediately Run on muffs first, always
Housing bolts left wet Corrosion welds the bolts into the leg Grease the bolt threads on assembly
Old gaskets left in place New housing sits proud and weeps Scrape the faces clean every time

Fitting Notes

Step Action
1 Check the model plate against F50TL, T50TL, P60TL, 70ET or 70TL, other 70 HP motors take a different kit
2 Check the driveshaft splines and the key slot while the housing is off, a worn slot spins the impeller
3 Check the water tube grommet at the top of the housing, a perished grommet loses pressure after the kit is fitted
4 Clean the leg face and the water tube of old gasket and scale
5 Coat the housing bore and the blades with glycerine, not grease on the rubber
6 Fit the impeller with the blades bent in the direction of rotation
7 Fit all three gaskets and the O-ring 93210-46044, then the M8 x 45 and M8 x 55 bolts
8 Run on muffs and check the telltale at idle, then recheck after the first hour on the water
