Product Overview
Water pump rebuild kit for OMC Cobra and Cobra SX sterndrives from 2.3 L to 7.5 L, 140 HP to 460 HP, replacing 0984461 and 0765582 and crossing to Sierra 18-3212-1. The kit is one impeller, a stainless pump liner, a wear plate, a face seal and the housing gasket.
The liner is what makes this kit worth having over an impeller only: on the Cobra pump the stainless liner is pressed into the housing and it is the liner, not the housing, that scores when the impeller fails. Supplying liner, plate and seal together means the whole pump gets rebuilt in one pass instead of twice in a season.
It covers the OMC Cobra drives from 1986 to 1993 across the four, six and eight cylinder motors, including the 2.3 L and 2.5 L fours and the 7.5 L 460 V8. Alignment of the drive shaft and a clean face on the housing are what decide whether the new seal lives, so check both before fitting.

Before You Buy
- Check the drive is an OMC Cobra or Cobra SX, the earlier Stringer mechanical shift drive uses a different pump
- Check the housing bore for scoring before pressing the new liner in, a scored housing will not hold the liner square
- Drain the gear lube first and look at it, milky lube means the seal has been leaking and the bearings need checking
- Note the trim rod position before dropping the lower unit
- Rotate the driveshaft while pushing the impeller in so the blades fold the right way
- Refill the lube to the level plug and check the telltale stream on muffs before the first trip
