Water Pump V Belt 57-13457Q 29 Inch for MerCruiser 4.3 5.0 5.7 7.4 8.2 Sterndrive
Water Pump V Belt 57-13457Q 29 Inch for MerCruiser 4.3 5.0 5.7 7.4 8.2 Sterndrive
Product Overview
Water pump V belt for MerCruiser 4.3 L, 5.0 L, 5.7 L, 7.4 L and 8.2 L sterndrive and inboard engines, the 29 in belt that drives the sea water pump off the engine pulley. It replaces MerCruiser 57-13457, 57-13457T, 57-13457Q, 57-53215 and 57-53215T, and it ships as one belt in a 180 mm x 160 mm x 50 mm box at 70 g.
The belt runs from the crank pulley to the sea water pump pulley and is the only thing turning the pump that keeps raw water moving through the heat exchanger and the exhaust. It is a plain single V belt rather than a serpentine belt, and it takes a much harder life than the alternator belt because the pump is working against water pressure at every engine speed.
A belt of this age has usually been through several seasons of heat cycles and salt air. The failure mode is not dramatic: it cracks at the base of the V, then a cord lets go, and the belt either slips or comes off. On the water the result is the same either way, because a sea water pump that stops turning means no cooling and an exhaust that starts to overheat within minutes.
Carrying a spare is normal practice on these engines, and replacing the belt at the start of a season costs very little against a tow home. If the old belt is glazed on the sides or shows a shiny band, the pump pulley or the crank pulley is likely worn as well, and both should be checked while the belt is off.
Fitment covers the 4.3 L from 1992 to 1996, the 5.0 L from 1971 to 1995 including the 888, 228, 230 and 898 models, the 5.7 L from 1975 to 1996 including the 260, 330, 350 MAG, MPI, Ski and Bravo EFI, the 7.4 L from 1981 to 1997 including the 330, 340, 454 MAG and 465, and the 8.2 L 502 MAG and MIE from 1990 to 1997. Check the engine plate or the serial number against the table before ordering.
