Product Overview
Zinc anode plug for the Volvo Penta inboard and sterndrive engines, the sacrificial anode that screws into the cooling jacket and takes the corrosion before the engine does. It replaces Volvo Penta 838928, it fits the D4, D5, D6, D7 and D9 diesels among others, it is also used on the 2001, 2003, AD, AQAD and TAMD ranges listed below, and it ships as one plug in a 150 mm x 180 mm x 30 mm box at 70 g.
The plug has a zinc core, so it is meant to waste away. In salt water the anode is the metal that corrodes, and the engine block stays intact. Once the zinc is half gone the plug stops protecting anything, and the corrosion starts on the block instead.
Checking it is part of the annual service. Take the plug out, look at how much zinc is left, and replace it if the core is eaten back or if it has gone white and powdery. A plug left in until the zinc is gone is the same as no anode at all.
The plug also seals the cooling jacket. The copper washer under the head has to be in good condition, and the thread has to be clean, or the plug weeps coolant under pressure once the engine is hot.
